Municipal leaders met foreign guests

Tong Guili, deputy mayor of Hangzhou, met Bruce Smith, mayor of Randwick, Australia, Feng Naxi, CEO of Merck & Co., Inc. (China), Heiye Shang, board director of Panasonic on the afternoon of July 8.
Ms. Tong said that Hangzhou share some common ground with Randwick. With the accelerating integration of the development in the Yangtze River Delta, Hangzhou, as a traffic hub in this area, hopes to cooperate more closely with Randwick in environmental protection, education, historical relics protection, industrial development and civil servant communication. Mr. Smith sincerely invited civil servants from Hangzhou to go to visit Randwick.
Merck (China), in cooperation with Hangzhou Huadong Medicine, set up Hangzhou Merck Pharmaceutics in 1994. It plans to add to its investment in Hangzhou and is picking the new factory site. Ms. Tong introduced Hangzhou as the exemplary city of IPR protection and the leading city of technological innovation. Being one of the best pharmaceutical companies in Hangzhou, Hangzhou Merck achieved the sales revenue of 2 billion RMB. Merck is welcomed to upgrade its business operation in Hangzhou.
While talking with the Japanese guest, Ms. Tong emphasized Hangzhou is trying its best to become China’s Silicon Valley. To buoy this ambition, Hangzhou is polishing up its policies on intellectual introduction and hard environment improvement. With the strength in technological field and IT outsourcing industry, Hangzhou has been awarded with the titles like National IT Industry Base, Exemplary Base of IT Outsourcing and National Software Export Base. It is hoping to work more closely with the outsourcing industry in Japan. High-end businesses will be offered preferential policies, vintage services and sound environment. Heiye Shang said he was impressed with Hangzhou’s natural environment and investment policies. They also discussed the cooperation on the information center design.
