Introduction to ZUST


ZUST was founded in 1980, initially known as Hangzhou Industrial School Attached to Zhejiang University. Over 40 years’ development, ZUST has grown into a first-class application- oriented provincial university with distinctive international and regional characteristics.


ZUST enjoys two fascinating campuses. XiaoHeshan Campus is situated in Xihu Scenic Area, adjacent to Xixi Wetland, covering a land of more than 126.7 hectares with 470,000 square meters’ buildings and construction. Anji Campus is located in Anji of Hu Zhou city the birthplace of Xi Jinping’s “Two Mountain Theory: Lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets”, with a land of more than 66.7 hectares and 170,000 square meters’ buildings and construction. In the two campuses of ZUST are 17 schools and 1 teaching center which offer 57 undergraduate programs, 6 master's academic degree programs under first-class disciplines, and 8 master's professional degree programs. At present, there are more than 19000 full-time undergraduate and graduate students and nearly 1000 international students in ZUST. The total value of the teaching and research equipment of ZUST is about 500 million Yuan, and the volumes of books over 1.90 million.


ZUST boasts a team of excellent talents with international vision, higher academic level, noble ethics and reasonable composition. There are nearly 1600 teaching staff, over 1200 of whom are full-time teachers, 530 of them with senior professional titles, 54% with doctoral degrees, 32% with more than 6 months’ overseas academic experience, 51% with Engineering practice experience. Among them are 16 national talents, such as the innovation team leaders of the Yangtze River Scholar and Innovation Team Development Plan, the candidates of the National “Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand” Talents Project, the national scientific and technological innovation talents and entrepreneurship of the “Ten Thousand Talents Plan”, and the young and middle-aged national experts with outstanding contributions, as well as more than 120 provincial such talents.


Upholding the motto of “Virtue and Truth, Creativity and Practicality”, ZUST has been being committed to establishing a new modern applied university in German model with Chinese characteristics for a long time, by adhering to the educational concept “apply what we have learned and make an all-round development” so as to forge “a cradle of outstanding engineers”, for which education reform and practice have been being actively carried out all the time to cultivate high-quality applied talents with practice ability, innovation spirit, international vision and social responsibility.


ZUST has achieved 6 provincial first-class disciplines and established 13 scientific research and innovation platforms and think tanks such as the provincial key laboratories, the provincial international science and technology cooperation bases, the national and regional research center of the Ministry of Education, etc. In addition, ZUST has jointly founded 1 research center with the Industrial Culture Development Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, cooperatively built with local governments 19 local research institutes and centers for scientific research and development, or for scientific and technological transfer or transformation, and successfully created 3 key science and technology innovation teams of Zhejiang Province and 2 science and technology innovation teams of Zhejiang provincial universities. Besides, ZUST has won over 40 ministerial or provincial scientific research awards, including 2 national science and technology prizes in recent years.


ZUST is the pilot institution of Chinese-German cooperation in the area of application-orientated talent cultivation by the Ministry of Education; it is also the pilot university involved in Excellent Engineers Education and Training Plan of the Ministry of Education. In addition, ZUST has been selected as one of the universities to actualize the National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program for College Students, and as one of the universities to effectuate the National “13th Five-Year” Education Modernization Promotion Project——Industry-Education Integration Development Project. Besides, ZUST holds the leadership in Digital Manufacturing Industry-education Integration Alliance in Zhejiang province. To the end, ZUST has established 8 national teaching and practice platforms, and 24 ministerial or provincial teaching and practice platforms, such as the Industry-Education Integration Innovation Base of the Ministry of Education, etc. Besides, ZUST is constructing 9 National First-class Featured Undergraduate Majors and 33 Provincial First-class Undergraduate Majors; 7 majors have passed the certification of China Engineering Education, and 3 majors have passed the certification by the German Council for Professional Certification. Accordingly, ZUST has 151 national or provincial first-class undergraduate courses, and 49 national or provincial teaching textbooks (projects). As a result, ZUST has won 2 national teaching achievement awards, 1 national excellent textbook award and 5 provincial 1st prizes of teaching achievement. As for ZUST students’ attainment in various contests, they have made great success in international or domestic discipline competitions. E.g., in the past five years, they have won over 5500 provincial or above awards, including more than 50 international awards, 1800 national prizes and 3700 provincial ones; thereby, ZUST ranked annually the 139th in 2021 National College Discipline Competition. In a word, thanks to the application-orientated Education philosophy, ZUST keeps among the top universities in Zhejiang Province in regard of the initial employment rate and their salary of the graduates. Thus, ZUST has been appraised as “National Graduate Employment Typical Experience University” by the Ministry of Education.


ZUST has been keeping on the way of international education so that it always takes international exchanges and cooperation as an important development strategy; thus, its distinctive feature is international education. In this regard, ZUST is the first batch of universities to pass the quality certification on overseas students’ study in China by the Ministry of Education; it is also the construction unit of “Sino-German Forum” base, the member unit of the Federation of Colleges and Universities among China-Central and Eastern European Countries, the member unit of the Alliance of Business Colleges and Universities along the Silk Road. What's more, ZUST is the first batch of colleges and universities sponsored by the Silk Road Chinese Government Scholarship, the first batch colleges and universities funded by the China Scholarship Council for Young Key Teachers' Overseas Study program, the first batch colleges and universities to recruit overseas students to study in China subsidized by the Chinese Government Scholarship. On the whole, ZUST is the first batch of universities with international characteristics in Zhejiang province, its overall internationalization level ranks at the top of universities with the right to confer master's and doctoral degrees in Zhejiang Province; it also ranks at the top 50 China's public universities with international competitiveness.

ZUST has hitherto established exchange and cooperative relations with 141 universities in Germany, France, the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, Japan, Belgium, Romania and other countries (outside China's mainland) on the basis of 179 various international cooperation and exchange projects. Especially, the Sino-German cooperation has become an important window for education, cultural, science and technology exchanges and cooperation between Zhejiang Province and Germany, even between China and Germany, for the Sino-German cooperation between ZUST and German universities has been long and fruitful, e.g., the former German Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke highly of the cooperation achievements between ZUST and German universities during G20 Hangzhou Summit, besides, the former German President Herzog and Woolf visited ZUST personally one after another.

ZUST is one of the universities with the most international majors in English in Zhejiang Province for it offers 12 international majors in English at undergraduate level, 12 international majors in English at master level, and 2 international majors in English have been selected as the key international major project of Department of Education of Zhejiang Province. In addition, ZUST has developed three Sino-foreign cooperative education programs at the undergraduate level and founded the first Sino-foreign cooperative educational institute in Zhejiang Province--Chinese-German Institute for Applied Engineering (CDAI), and the first national industrial culture institute --Chinese-German Industrial Culture Institute. Besides, ZUST has the first Chinese -German Industry-Education Integration Major--the pilot program Vehicle Engineering Undergraduate Major; it has also successively established two overseas Confucius Institutes in Romania and Germany respectively, among which the Confucius Institute in Babes-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca in Romania was awarded as the "Advanced Confucius Institute" in the world.


Currently, all the teachers, officials, workers and students of ZUST are sparing no effort in contributing to building it into a higher level University in accordance with the grand blueprint adopted by the 4th Session of the Party Congress of ZUST, which is being carried on by laying a solid moral foundation for students and simultaneously strengthening the application-orientated education and further manifesting its distinctive feature of internationalization in light of the development strategy “multiple schools integrating, four-wheel driving”. To be exact, ZUST is advancing with disciplines integration as the spearhead, Industry-Education Integration and international cooperation as two wings, and industry institute, industry research institute, institutes with international characteristics as the body, which is dynamically powered by modernization of university governance.
